Anthropologie’s endlessly crafty window dressers have salvaged thousands of tattered old paperbacks to create a sculptural mise-en-scène in which to display their glamour-gear for the literary set. Removing from the equation all of the aspects of the book that one would normally associate with design and décor—e.g. covers, illustrations, typography—the books are reduced to their purest form: letterforms on paper.

When free of the riot of crashing surf and churning foam, the sea offers a subtle feast for the senses, one that brings us closer to grasping its true scope and meditative power. It is this timeless and awe-inspiring quality that photographer Debra Bloomfield explores in Still.

Interview with David Borgenicht, author of The Worst-Case Scenario Almanac: Politics

Reverends gone wild (first Wright, now Jackson?). Teleprompter mishaps (can you say Lex-ing-ton Proj-ect?). Terrorist fist bumps (yep, that one’s still got legs). And my favorite breaking news to date: the “Mental Recession.” Just in case you’re counting (and if you have one of these, you know you are), there are 112 days left until the general election. Which means the worst is yet to come. It’s monsoon season in politics, so we caught up with David Borgenicht, the mastermind behind the wildly popular Worst-Case Scenario series, to find out how to prepare for the flood.

Master’s Thesis, California College of the Arts

Maps have always told stories—what’s different now is the ability for anyone, not just trained professionals, to use maps to describe something meaningful spatially, and to share this situated knowledge, these personal geographies, with others. It’s said that history is being rewritten every day. Why shouldn’t maps be redrawn just as often?

What really turns women on?
The Cambridge Women’s Pornography Cooperative traveled far and wide, surveying women across the land, to find out. They asked young women, old women, rich and poor, “what really, really, gets you hot?” The result is so provocative, so incendiary, so dangerously addictive… it’s unlike any porn you’ve ever seen before.
Prepare to enter a fantasy world. A world where clothes get folded just so, men insist on changing diapers, delicious dinners await, and flatulence is just not that funny.

Naming project, Chronicle Books and Method

When Adam Lowry and Eric Ryan founded Method, the environmentally friendly brand of cleaning products, they used packaging stylish enough to showcase on the countertop and pleasant aromas such as green tea and cucumber to transform household products into must-have lifestyle accessories. They were so taken with the title I wrote for their first book, Squeaky Green, they trademarked it as the name of their new product line for kids.

Oh hells yes. Van Halen is BACK! Last week the band announced that after 22 years, lead singer David Lee Roth would be rejoining the boys for a massive, 25-city North American tour this fall. And don’t call them “rockers with walkers,” either. The three original members—Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, and drummer Alex Van Halen—may be in their 50s, but according to Eddie, “It’s better than it’s ever been… It is totally blowing our minds and I think it will yours, too.”

Press release, The RISD Museum

In the late summer of 1885, a group of friends gathered in the popular resort town of Dieppe on the Normandy coast of France. With its beachfront promenade and sprawling chalets, Dieppe was a chic destination for artists and writers eager to escape the stifling heat of Paris and London. The summer of 1885 was like many others, but for one remarkable souvenir—Edgar Degas’s Six Friends at Dieppe, a dramatic pastel portrait representing key members of the artist’s milieu.

RISD’s design strategy incorporates inventive building systems and advanced engineering to power the house, and innovative structural components like venting skin and a “green” roof reduce the energy load of the house. The energy-efficient dwelling is on display in Providence through September 24, when it will be dismantled and transported to Washington on four flatbed trucks.

What motivates Chris Bull to build bicycles is not only a love for riding, but also a belief that what he does is changing the world for the better. On his website (www.circleacycles.com) there is a treatise on anarchism and the philosophy behind Circle A Cycles. “For us, bikes aren’t toys or simple transportation or art. They represent a human scaled and powered future. They are the revolution.”

Press release, The RISD Museum

Inspired by Roman wall painting, classical vessels, and plant forms, Il Giardino Dipinto—a promised gift to the Museum from Woodman’s son Charles and his wife Andrea—is a colorful glazed earthenware installation that measures nine feet high by thirty-five feet long and is composed of more than sixty parts. Woodman’s painted garden features a balustrade of flat half vases above which three fully three-dimensional vases are mounted. The space around these vases is filled with flattened vessels, handles, shelves, and plant parts. The garden’s space is ambiguous, allowing the viewer to be simultaneously inside looking outside and outside looking inside its architectural framework.
